The Driven Mind of a Champion: What it Takes to Represent Your Country
September 2025

When we think of champions, our minds often go straight to the outcome - the trophies, the headlines, the moments of glory. But psychology tells us something different. True champions are made long before the final spotlight. It lives in the early mornings, the unseen sacrifices and The Driven Mind that refuses to give in.

That's why I'm so proud to announce that The Driven Mind® is sponsoring Jess Pym, who has been selected to play for the England Women's Indoor Cricket Team in Sri Lanka.

This is more than sport. It's about dedication, resilience and the mindset of a champion.

Winning Isn't Just The Outcome

We often mistake winning as the definition of a champion. But true winning isn't simply the outcome - it's the mindset that makes the outcome possible. What really defines a champion is the psychology behind the performance - the ability to hold focus under pressure, to bounce back from setbacks and to keep moving forward when it would be easier to stop.

Growth Mindset

Psychologist Carol Dweck describes a growth mindset as the belief that skills and intelligence can be developed through effort, learning and persistence. Instead of seeing ability as fixed, champions with a growth mindset treat challenges as opportunities, effort as the path to mastery and setbacks as feedback.

Grit

According to researcher Angela Duckworth, grit is the combination of passion and perseverance for long-term goals. Champions with grit stay committed when the initial excitement fades, keep working when progress feels slow and stay focused on their goals even when obstacles arise.

Resilience

In her work on leadership and performance, Diane Coutu defines resilience as the ability to adapt, recover and grow stronger after setbacks. Champions aren't defined by never falling - they're defined by how they rise. Resilience is what allows people to keep faith in themselves, adjust when things change and turn challenges into stepping stones.

Jess embodies all of these. Her England shirt is the visible symbol of her achievement - but the real story lies in the invisible work: the hours of training, the mindset that says "I can," and the ability to keep faith in the process even when the outcome isn't guaranteed.

Psychology in Action - Beyond Sport

These psychological principles aren't limited to athletes. We see them in leadership, in careers and in everyday life. That's what makes Jess's story so powerful, it's a mirror for all of us.

In Leadership, it's called Discipline

The best leaders aren't those who show up only when things are easy. They're the ones who set the tone day after day, through their consistency, their clarity and their presence under pressure. Just like an athlete, a leader's discipline inspires confidence in others and creates the conditions for teams to thrive.

In Careers, its Resilience

Every career has setbacks, missed promotions, projects that don't deliver, moments of doubt. Resilience is what allows us to keep moving forward, to learn from disappointment and to try again with even greater strength. Without resilience, progress stalls. With it, careers flourish.

In Everyday Life, it is Self-Belief

We don't need a stadium or a spotlight to practice the psychology of a champion. Sometimes the bravest thing we do is simply choosing to show up for ourselves, applying for the opportunity, setting the boundary, or taking the first step toward something new. Self-belief is the foundation of every small, quiet victory.

Building The Driven Mind

At The Driven Mind®, we create tools to help people build these exact qualities:

  • The Self-Kindness Check-In strengthens resilience by helping you regulate your inner voice and recover from pressure.
  • The Confidence Compass builds belief and helps you overcome self-doubt.

  • Influence Profile reveals your leadership style and increases awareness of your impact on others.
  • Growth Mindprint enhances your ability to progress by exploring your growth behaviours and mindset.

That's why The Driven Mind® is so proud to stand alongside Jess. Because her journey reflects something we can all take into our own lives: Whether you're stepping into a new workplace, leading a team, or facing your own personal challenges, it's not the prize that defines you. It's the mindset you build along the way.
